In God's perfectly created world, He created a garden and that is where Adam and Eve lived. They were the very first people. They were made in God's image and He loved them very much. But they did a very dumb thing. God gave them one rule and they flat out disobeyed it. This was the very first sin in the world. And it was a very big deal.
Adam and Eve weren't the only ones to ever sin. Every single one of us do. Watch this video to see why it matters that we sin.
Every person in the world has a problem. We sin. We do things that separate us from God. It is a problem we can not fix on our own.
This is why we celebrate the nativity. The scene of Jesus in a manger reminds us that God didn't leave us alone with no way to fix our sin problem. He sent His very own Son to rescue us. That is why Jesus was born in a manger. That is why He came.
1 Corinthians 15:22 tells us that just like sin came to all of us through one man - Adam - our rescue will come through one man - Jesus!
Do: Designate a starting place and a finish line several feet away. Challenge each other to jump from one spot to the other. (You should make the spots where it is impossible to do this!) After each person tries, talk about how Romans 3:23 says we all fall short of the glory of God. We all sin. Our sin keeps us from being able to get to God on our own. This is why we need Jesus to save us from our sins.
Prepare inflated balloons and Sharpies. (An alternative would be to just use paper and end up ripping the papers up) Ask each family member to think of a sin that they need to confess to God and write/draw it on the balloon. Ask each family member to pray and talk about their sin. When they are done they can pop their balloon. Remind them that because Jesus came, He made a way for us to be forgiven of our sins. He takes our sins away.
